How a scrawny little pumpkin cheers up the children

Poor ‘Little Guy’ by Charlotte Partin

There was a pumpkin family
living in a pumpkin patch
Mom and dad and brother
were robust, round and fat
but there was a younger pumpkin
that was scrawny, pale and thin
All the other vegetables
were making fun of him.

“His color is pathetic”
the corn told the Lima bean,
“no one’s going to want him
when it comes to Halloween.”
The other veggies taunted
and called him “little guy”
and when the pumpkin heard them
a tear came to his eye.

One night in late October
a bus drove to the field
it was filled with children
who hollered, yelled and squealed.
“There’s one” they yelled and shouted
as it pulled up by the gate
“A pumpkin for the shelter kids,
I hope it’s not too late”

The children at the shelter
were excited as can be
they sure loved that “little guy”
and loved them, so did he.
All the children hugged him
they carved a smiling face
then put a cap upon his head
and gave him an honored place.

He gleamed and beamed with happiness
his eyes were all aglow
not one more tear that pumpkin shed
’caused he was loved, you know!
