Each day I wear a tattered old dress
My face not washed, my hair a mess
Socks do match, but they are torn
Shoes are dirty, broken and worn

My family lives in my father’s old truck
We are homeless and down on our luck
Once we had a beautiful home
Now all we do is roam, roam, roam!

From place to place and town to town
For there are no jobs to be found
My mother cries nearly every night
“For Americans to live like this, just aint right.”

I looked forward to Halloween
My dream was to go dressed as a queen
My mother said, “Don’t worry about a costume, honey”
“We can go as we are, they’ll think we are funny”

She smiled at me with tears in her eyes
I said, “No one can break up our family ties”
I grabbed a plastic grocery bag
For Halloween, I was a homeless old hag
