New Poem About Homeless Children and Halloween
“A Homeless Child on All Hallows’ Eve”
by Deborah C. Kammer
i’ll forgo my treat
and not play a trick on you
there is one thing you could do
spare just a penny or two
i could feed my family tonight
if everyone gave,
we could eat for a week
have warm feet
i see your bowls
full of candy
and sweets
the jack-o’-lantern
burns bright
right down the street
we live not far away
just down the turnpike
near the edge of the bay
under the bridge
we don’t have a fridge
some days we can fish
other days …
we search through the trash
one day my dad
will earn us some cash
we will have cake
and toothpaste
a proper bathroom
where i can wash up
my face
i’ll go to school
with the rest of the kids
clean clothes
and a washing machine
a nice warm bed
in a room
that’s safe
a puppy for a mate
friends over on
the weekends
clean plates
i can laugh and play
eat breakfast every day
Mum and Dad will walk tall
and be proud of me
my brothers ~
and baby May
i’ll forgo my treat
and not play a trick
just a penny will do
or a toy or two
you see this is not
my fancy dress costume
it’s what I wear ~
on the streets
